Refuting Jehovah’s Witnesses
Jehovah’s Witness view on Jesus
Jesus is not God, but “the only begotten Son of God.”
- Christian counter-refutation:
- Psalm 2:7 as Messianic prophecy pointing to Jesus, not David literally.
- “Begotten” in NT = unique ontological sonship of Jesus, not metaphorical.
- Muslim counter-counter refutation:
- Jesus himself calls himself a Prophet in the Bible (Luke 13:33).
- Others call him a prophet (John 6:14).
- Term “Son of God” used metaphorically for others too, e.g. Psalm 2:7 and David as begotten.
- Text itself is in David’s mouth, not future tense (“You are my son, today I have begotten you”).
- Contradiction in applying “only begotten” when others are called begotten.
- Qur’an closes the debate: He begets not, nor is He begotten.
Jehovah’s Witness rejection of Trinity
Rejects Trinity — believes in one God (Jehovah), with Jesus subordinate.
- Christian counter-refutation (Trinitarians):
- Doctrine of Hypostatic Union — Jesus is fully God and fully man.
- “Sonship” is not metaphorical but eternal participation in the divine.
- Muslim counter-counter refutation:
- If Jesus is not God, why elevate him as “only begotten Son”?
- Logical contradiction of Trinity (incoherence of being 100% man and 100% God).
- Qur’an explicitly warns: Do not say ‘Three’; desist, it is better for you.
Jehovah’s Witness on Bible authenticity
Believes Bible is corrupted but still the Word of God; New World Translation attempts correction.
- Christian counter-refutation:
- Harmonization: One genealogy is through Joseph, the other through Mary.
- Textual inspiration by the Holy Spirit means minor scribal errors do not affect core message.
- Muslim counter-counter refutation:
- Both genealogies explicitly state Joseph, not Mary.
- Contradictions in Biblical genealogies (Matthew vs Luke).
- Clear contradictions (e.g., Joseph’s father as Jacob vs Heli).
- If Divine text has human error, then authority collapses.
- Qur’an uniquely preserved via Hifz tradition of memorization and Uniform Quranic manuscripts.
Jehovah’s Witness on Scripture preservation
Scripture written by inspired but imperfect men; minor errors possible.
- Christian counter-refutation:
- Human transmission always involves error, even oral.
- What matters is the Spirit guiding overall message, not perfect words.
- Muslim counter-counter refutation:
- If errors exist, then how can we distinguish God’s words from human additions?
- Quran stands apart: preserved both orally and textually.
- Ijaz al-Quran in preservation — only scripture in history with mass memorization chain and consistency across centuries.
- Unlike Bible: Codex Sinaiticus textual differences vs Codex Vaticanus textual differences.
Jehovah’s Witness rejection of Christmas and Paganism
Reject Christmas, birthdays, and crosses as pagan innovations.
- Christian counter-refutation:
- Christmas as cultural expression — symbolic celebration of Christ’s birth, not literal.
- Muslim counter-counter refutation:
- Origins of Christmas in Saturnalia undeniable.
- Qur’an condemns additions to divine law: Today I have perfected your religion.
Jehovah’s Witness view of David
David seen primarily as king, not prophet.
- Christian counter-refutation:
- Some denominations affirm David as prophet-king, but role debated.
- Muslim counter-counter refutation:
- Acts 2:29-30 explicitly calls David a prophet.
- Qur’an confirms: Remember Our servant David, the one with strength; he was repeatedly turning to Allah.
- O David, We have made you a khalifa on earth.
