A person’s mindset determines how they deal with challenges and failures. Carol Dweck’s Research on Mindset

Fixed Mindset

Kids with a fixed mindset believe their success is based on innate traits like intelligence or talent. They value effort less and are more likely to give up when faced with failure, as they view their abilities as unchangeable. Deterministic Outlook, Praise and Mindset

Growth Mindset

Kids with a growth mindset focus on growth and learning, regardless of performance. They view success as a result of practice and effort rather than inborn traits. When faced with failure, they are more likely to try again, seeing it as a learning experience. Praise and Mindset, Responding to Failure

Samskaras and Mindset

The concept of fixed and growth mindsets aligns with the yogic concept of samskaras - internalized experiences that shape one’s perception and reactions. Childhood experiences and praise influence the development of these mindsets. Emotional Energy of Experiences, Personality Change

The yogi’s taught us that Samskaras are not permanent. There. There are parts of our memory that that are sort of laid down. But the good news is that our personality can change over time. Some scars can be digested over time and new, Samskaras can be laid down.

Shifting Mindset

Even if someone has a fixed mindset, it is possible to shift towards a growth mindset through awareness and cognitive reframing. This involves:

  1. Noticing one’s reaction to failure and the effect on motivation
  2. Acknowledging the influence of past experiences and praise
  3. Challenging fixed mindset thoughts by considering what advice you would give a friend in the same situation
  4. Recognizing that failure is not deterministic and that improvement comes with practice

Intentional Cognitive Reframes, Combating Fixed Mindset Thoughts, Increasing Motivation

As we combat the perception that failing once is failing forever. As we combat the perception that failure is deterministic. What will naturally start to do is increase our motivation.
