Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

  • What it is:  A type of talk therapy, originally developed for borderline personality disorder (BPD), that is now used for a wide range of issues associated with emotional distress.
  • What it teaches:  Four main skill sets:
    • Mindfulness: Being present and aware of your thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment.
    • Distress Tolerance: Learning to cope with difficult emotions and situations without resorting to impulsive or harmful behaviors.
    • Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing intense emotions to reduce vulnerability and increase positive emotions.
    • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Improving communication, setting boundaries, and managing relationships more effectively.
  • How it works:  It combines acceptance and change through a combination of individual therapy, skills training groups, phone coaching, and therapist consultation teams.
