Fitra

In Islamic teachings, fitrah refers to the innate human nature, an original disposition or natural constitution created by God. It’s the inherent inclination towards goodness, righteousness, and recognizing the oneness of God (Tawhid) that every person is born with. This concept is central to Islamic psychology and belief, suggesting that humans are naturally inclined towards faith and a fulfilling life aligned with God’s will.

Innate Nature and Disposition:

  • Fitrah is often translated as “original disposition,” “natural constitution,” or “innate nature”.
  • It’s the state of purity and innocence that Muslims believe all humans are born with.
  • This innate nature includes an inclination towards Tawhid (the oneness of God) and other attributes that embody humanity.

Connection to Islam:

  • Fitrah is closely linked to the concept of Islam as the natural religion for humanity.
  • The belief is that every person is born with a predisposition to accept the truth of Islam.
  • Surah Ar-Rum (30:30) in the Qur’an is often cited, emphasizing that God created humans with a specific fitrah, which is the true religion.

Dimensions of Fitrah:

  • Fitrah encompasses both physical and spiritual aspects.
  • [Physical acts of cleanliness] like Circumcision, removing body hair, and trimming nails are considered part of fitrah.
  • The spiritual aspect includes an innate inclination towards goodness, righteousness, and the recognition of God.

Fitrah and Morality:

  • Fitrah provides a foundation for morality, suggesting that humans are naturally inclined to do good.
  • This innate disposition can be nurtured and developed through following Islamic teachings.
  • While humans are born with this natural inclination, external influences can affect their behavior.

Fitrah and Self-Improvement:

  • The concept of fitrah encourages individuals to strive for purity and self-improvement.
  • It’s a reminder of the inherent goodness within each person and a guide towards living a fulfilling life.
  • By recognizing and nurturing their fitrah, individuals can find peace, happiness, and spiritual well-being, youtube/v=z3TR7u5AYPk.
