Ideal self
The real self is who you authentically are in the present moment, encompassing your true thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, while the ideal self is the version of yourself you aspire to be, including your goals, dreams, and aspirations. A large gap, or incongruence, between these two selves can lead to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety, whereas a smaller gap, or congruence, promotes self-worth and fulfillment.
Carl Rogers’ concept of real self vs. ideal self and its connection to self-worth:
Real Self (Actual Self)
- Definition: This is your current, authentic self, comprising your actual thoughts, behaviors, traits, strengths, and weaknesses.
- Discovery: It’s revealed through consistently observing your own actions and daily decisions.
- Significance: Living in alignment with your real self fosters authenticity and personal fulfillment.
Ideal Self
- Definition: This is the version of yourself you wish to become – your goals, dreams, and the qualities you aspire to possess.
- Influences: It’s shaped by societal expectations, personal ambitions, values, and admired traits.
- Purpose: It acts as a motivational force, driving personal growth and giving direction to your life.
The Gap Between the Selves
- Congruence: When your perceptions of your real and ideal selves are similar, you experience congruence, leading to greater self-worth, a healthy sense of well-being, and a productive life.
- Incongruence: A significant discrepancy between the real and ideal self (incongruence) can lead to negative emotions such as anxiety, inadequacy, low self-esteem, and frustration.
- Bridging the Gap: To achieve congruence, you can bridge the gap by setting realistic goals, practicing self-acceptance, and making small, consistent changes to align your behaviors with your aspirations.
