Theology

The four common types of theology are biblical, historical, systematic, and practical. Biblical theology focuses on the Bible’s own unfolding message, historical theology studies how Christian beliefs have developed over time, systematic theology organizes beliefs into a coherent system, and practical theology applies these truths to living life today.

  • Biblical theology: Studies how the Bible presents its message progressively throughout its books, often looking at the theology of a specific author or section of scripture.
  • Historical theology: Examines and evaluates how theologians and major figures have understood and interpreted the Bible and its teachings throughout history.
  • Systematic theology: Organizes and synthesizes beliefs into a logical and coherent system, addressing topics like God, humanity, sin, and salvation.
  • Practical theology: Applies theological truths to life, answering the question of “How should we then live?” and considering the implications for the church and the world.
