Surah Ta-Ha
20:1
طه ١
Ṭâ-Hâ.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
20:2
مَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِتَشْقَىٰٓ ٢
We have not revealed the Quran to you ˹O Prophet˺ to cause you distress,

20:3
إِلَّا تَذْكِرَةًۭ لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ ٣
but as a reminder to those in awe ˹of Allah˺.

20:4
تَنزِيلًۭا مِّمَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ ٱلْعُلَى ٤
˹It is˺ a revelation from the One Who created the earth and the high heavens—

20:5
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ ٥
the Most Compassionate, ˹Who is˺ established on the Throne.

20:6
لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَمَا تَحْتَ ٱلثَّرَىٰ ٦
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth and whatever is in between and whatever is underground.

20:7
وَإِن تَجْهَرْ بِٱلْقَوْلِ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ وَأَخْفَى ٧
Whether you speak openly ˹or not˺, He certainly knows what is secret and what is even more hidden.

20:8
ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ لَهُ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ٨
Allah—there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He has the Most Beautiful Names.

20:14
إِنَّنِىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدْنِى وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ ١٤
‘It is truly I. I am Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Me. So worship Me ˹alone˺, and establish prayer for My remembrance.

20:15
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ ءَاتِيَةٌ أَكَادُ أُخْفِيهَا لِتُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا تَسْعَىٰ ١٥
The Hour is sure to come. My Will is to keep it hidden, so that every soul may be rewarded according to their efforts.

20:16
فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا مَن لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِهَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ فَتَرْدَىٰ ١٦
So do not let those who disbelieve in it and follow their desires distract you from it, or you will be doomed.’”

20:17
وَمَا تِلْكَ بِيَمِينِكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ ١٧
˹Allah added,˺ “And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?”

20:18
قَالَ هِىَ عَصَاىَ أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ عَلَيْهَا وَأَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلَىٰ غَنَمِى وَلِىَ فِيهَا مَـَٔارِبُ أُخْرَىٰ ١٨
He replied, “It is my staff! I lean on it, and with it I beat down ˹branches˺ for my sheep, and have other uses for it.”[1]
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
[1] Moses could have just said, “A staff.” But he volunteered to talk about the uses of the staff, adding that there are many other uses he has not mentioned, with the hope that Allah would ask him about it more. The reason is that Moses wanted to prolong the conversation with Allah as much as he could.
20:19
قَالَ أَلْقِهَا يَـٰمُوسَىٰ ١٩
Allah said, “Throw it down, O Moses!”

20:20
فَأَلْقَىٰهَا فَإِذَا هِىَ حَيَّةٌۭ تَسْعَىٰ ٢٠
So he did, then—behold!—it became a serpent, slithering.

20:21
قَالَ خُذْهَا وَلَا تَخَفْ ۖ سَنُعِيدُهَا سِيرَتَهَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ ٢١
Allah said, “Take it, and have no fear. We will return it to its former state.

20:22
وَٱضْمُمْ يَدَكَ إِلَىٰ جَنَاحِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَآءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوٓءٍ ءَايَةً أُخْرَىٰ ٢٢
And put your hand under your armpit, it will come out ˹shining˺ white, unblemished,[1] as another sign,

[1] Moses, who was dark-skinned, was asked to put his hand under his armpit. When he took it out it was shining white, but not out of a skin condition like vitiligo.
20:23
لِنُرِيَكَ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا ٱلْكُبْرَى ٢٣
so that We may show you some of Our greatest signs.

20:24
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ٢٤
Go to Pharaoh, for he has truly transgressed ˹all bounds˺.”

20:49
قَالَ فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا يَـٰمُوسَىٰ ٤٩
Pharaoh asked, “Who then is the Lord of you two, O Moses?”

20:50
قَالَ رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَعْطَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلْقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ ٥٠
He answered, “Our Lord is the One Who has given everything its ˹distinctive˺ form, then guided ˹it˺.”

20:51
قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ ٱلْقُرُونِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ٥١
Pharaoh asked, “And what about previous peoples?”

20:52
قَالَ عِلْمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّى فِى كِتَـٰبٍۢ ۖ لَّا يَضِلُّ رَبِّى وَلَا يَنسَى ٥٢
He replied, “That knowledge is with my Lord in a Record. My Lord neither falters nor forgets ˹anything˺.”

20:56
وَلَقَدْ أَرَيْنَـٰهُ ءَايَـٰتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَأَبَىٰ ٥٦
And We certainly showed Pharaoh all of Our signs,[1] but he denied them and refused ˹to believe˺.

20:57
قَالَ أَجِئْتَنَا لِتُخْرِجَنَا مِنْ أَرْضِنَا بِسِحْرِكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ ٥٧
He said, “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?

20:58
فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّكَ بِسِحْرٍۢ مِّثْلِهِۦ فَٱجْعَلْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ مَوْعِدًۭا لَّا نُخْلِفُهُۥ نَحْنُ وَلَآ أَنتَ مَكَانًۭا سُوًۭى ٥٨
We can surely meet you with similar magic. So set for us an appointment that neither of us will fail to keep, in a central place.”

20:105
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْجِبَالِ فَقُلْ يَنسِفُهَا رَبِّى نَسْفًۭا ١٠٥
And ˹if˺ they ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about the mountains, ˹then˺ say, “My Lord will wipe them out completely,

20:106
فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعًۭا صَفْصَفًۭا ١٠٦
leaving the earth level and bare,

20:107
لَّا تَرَىٰ فِيهَا عِوَجًۭا وَلَآ أَمْتًۭا ١٠٧
with neither depressions nor elevations to be seen.”

20:108
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلدَّاعِىَ لَا عِوَجَ لَهُۥ ۖ وَخَشَعَتِ ٱلْأَصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ فَلَا تَسْمَعُ إِلَّا هَمْسًۭا ١٠٨
On that Day all will follow the caller ˹for assembly˺, ˹and˺ none will dare to deviate. All voices will be hushed before the Most Compassionate. Only whispers[1] will be heard.
