Śiva & Mohinī

In Hindu mythology, the story of Shiva and Mohini centers around Vishnu’s female avatar, Mohini, and Shiva’s fascination with her. While Shiva is known for his asceticism and detachment, he is depicted as being captivated by Mohini’s beauty, leading to a unique encounter and the subsequent birth of Ayyappan, a popular deity.

The Encounter:

  • Vishnu’s Mohini Avatar: Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful enchantress, to trick the demons (Asuras) and secure the nectar of immortality (amrita) for the gods (Devas).
  • Shiva’s Curiosity: Shiva, intrigued by the stories of Mohini’s captivating beauty and actions, desired to see her form himself.
  • Mutual Attraction: When Shiva saw Mohini, he was overcome with desire and chased after her. Mohini, in turn, appeared to be attracted to Shiva as well, leading to a passionate encounter.
  • The Birth of Ayyappan: The union of Shiva and Mohini resulted in the birth of Ayyappan, a deity worshipped in South India.

Interpretations:

  • Devotion and Illusion: Some interpretations suggest that Shiva’s attraction was a test of his devotion and a demonstration of Vishnu’s power to create illusion, even captivating someone as powerful as Shiva.
  • A Bridge Between Shaivism and Vaishnavism: Ayyappan, as the son of Shiva and Mohini (an avatar of Vishnu), is seen as a symbol of unity between Shaivism and Vaishnavism.
  • Fascination with the Divine Feminine: The story can also be interpreted as Shiva’s fascination with the divine feminine principle, represented by Mohini.

Key Points:

  • The story of Shiva and Mohini is found in the Brahmanda Purana and other Hindu scriptures.
  • Ayyappan is a significant deity in South India, born from the union of Shiva and Mohini. enting%20a%20bridge%20between%20Shaivism%20and%20Vaishnavism.)]

The Divine Play of Shiva and Mohini

Who was Mohini?

Mohini was an illusion created by Devi Lalita Tripurasundari (Uma) because she herself is Vishnu maya

" Brahmad Purana" Salutations to Her who is of enthralling beauty; and who took the fascinating form of Mohini when Vishnu meditated upon Her identifying with Herself and took that form. (This occurred on the occasion of the churning of the milky ocean for the benefit of the gods

" Brahma Vaivarta Purana 2.1" । ।

Durga the mother of Ganesha, is the beloved of Lord Shiva. She is the form of Brahman and is Narayani, the illusion of Vishnu.

Soundarya Lahari By Adi Shankaracharya

"Sanskrit Verse" ।।

Lord Shiva, only becomes able, To do creation in this world along with Shakthi Without her, Even an inch he cannot move

"Sanskrit Verse with Translation"

Lord Vishnu, mediated on Shri Lalita Tripurasundari (Parvathy) and attained her form by uniting with her, And could move the mind of he who burnt the cities, And make him fall in love with her(mohini)

Guru Adi Shankaracharya writes in Soundarya lehri that without involvement of uma he cannot move an inch and mohini was goddess uma’s Maya form

Brahmanda Purana, Uttarbhaga 6

Thus, the Divine Mother who manifested and enchanted the demons was called MOHINI (the divine entrantress). Shiva, staying in Kailasha came to know of these events and wanted to note the speciality of the new form of Vishnu. Along with his consort Parvati, Shiva went to Vaikuntha, the abode of Vishnu and pressed Him to show the form of Mohini. Vishnu suddenly disappeared without saying yes or no.

While Shiva was searching for Vishnu, he happened to reach a new place where he continued to search.

There he heard the music of Veena. He saw a beautiful young lady.who was Mohini an incarnation of Lalitha Devi Unable to resist his infatuation, Shiva embraced her. At once a divine baby was born. He was named SHASTA (one who rules). He became a commander in Shiva’s army.

At once the lady disappeared. Shiva realised that she was none else than Mohini, a form of Vishnu. He applauded her beauty and returned to Kailasha along with Parvati.

Thus the Divine Mother incarnated as Mohini and granted success of the activities of the celestials.

Brahmand Puran Chapter 10

  1. In the meantime, Vishnu, the sole protector of all the worlds, earnestly propitiated Lalita whose form was in union with his own.

  2. The lord (Vishnu), the leader of Yogins, propitiated Maheshvari. By meditating solely on her, he became identical in form with her.

  3. She fascinated and enchanted everyone. She was the very heroine incarnate of the sentiment of love. She was richlyclad in a seductively charming dress and she was bedecked with all ornaments.

Brahmand Puran gives the same narration where Sri Hari got mohini roop from Devi Lalita after uniting with her and Mohini was maya (illusion) here we can see the Non duality (advaita) between Vishnu and Adi Shakti ।

Devi Uma Herself is in the form of Vishnu this chapter shows Aikyavada of Sri Hari and Devi Adi shakti

Shrimad Bhagwad Purana Clearly States

Shrimad Bhagwad Purana Clearly States that Shiva chasing Mohini was no other than it was vishnu’s illusion(maya) । which he chased

" SB 8.12.34" Following Mohini, Lord Siva went everywhere — near the shores of the rivers and lakes, near the mountains, near the forests, near the gardens, and wherever there lived great sages.

" SB 8.12.35" O Maharaja Parikshit, best of kings, when Lord Shiva had fully discharged semen, he could see how he himself had been victimized by the illusion created by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus he restrained himself from any further maya.

And further Vishnu’s illusionary power(Vishnu maya)is no other then Devi Uma herself Who else can enchant Mahadev except Devi Lalita herself.

" SB 8.12.42" O descendant of Bharata Maharaja, Lord Siva, in jubilation, then addressed his wife, Bhavani, who is accepted by all authorities as the potency of Lord Vishnu.
