The Etiquette of the Ritual Bath

The Etiquette of the Ritual Bath for the Removal of Major Ritual Impurity

Steps For the Ritual Bath (Ghusl):

  1. Preparation Before Washing:

    • Wash your hands three times before touching water.
    • Remove any visible impurities from the body.
  2. Make the Intention (Niyyah):

    • Intend to lift the state of major ritual impurity (janābah) and purify yourself for the sake of Allah.
  3. Perform Regular Ablution (Wudu):

    • Perform wudu as done before prayers (excluding washing the feet, which will come later).
    • This includes washing the hands, rinsing the mouth and nose, washing the face, and wiping the head.
  4. Washing the Body:

    • Right Side First: Pour water three times over the right side of the body.
    • Left Side Next: Pour water three times over the left side of the body.
    • The Head: Pour water over the head three times and ensure it penetrates to the roots of the hair.
    • Rub the entire body, front and back, ensuring water reaches all areas, including folds of skin.
  5. Wash the Feet Last:

    • Wash both feet thoroughly, ensuring water reaches between the toes.
  6. Avoid Touching Private Parts:

    • If you touch your private parts after completing wudu, repeat the ablution (wudu).

Obligatory Aspects of Ghusl:

The following are fard (obligatory) and must be observed for Ghusl to be valid:

  1. Making the intention (niyyah).
  2. Removing all impurities (physical filth).
  3. Ensuring water reaches and encompasses the entire body, including the roots of the hair.
